TEAM WINS FIRST GAME, 9-8 written by Dave Moore
Your neighborhood team played against a church team from Gettysburg on Thursday evening at 6:3O on August 7th, and came out with a win against very tough competition! Randy Kauffman brought the experienced Gettysburg Baptist/7th Day Adventist team to our field for our inaugural game, which featured some great hitting and fielding on both sides.
We got off to a strong start in the bottom of the 1st inning with a solo homer to deep right center by Vic Bentley, followed by some nice base hits to load the bases. With two outs, lefty Ron Gilbert drilled a shot to right field resulting in a 4-run opening inning. We added some runs along the way – as did the visitors – and they went ahead 6-5 in the top of the 4th inning. But we answered with a couple runs in our half and added two more in the 5th, making it 9-6. But the visitors rallied with two more in the 6th to make it 9-8. We were scoreless in the 6th and relied on Rick Franzese’s superb pitching in the top of the seventh to close out the game.
There were crowd-pleasing hits and some outstanding fielding on both sides as well. Tim Markey made game-saving catches in RF as did Mike Tully speared a down-the-line sure-hit rocket at 3B. Our infielders made some well-coordinated plays to stop several rallies in their tracks.
Scotty Watt – just out of Stevie Wonder’s Umpire School , called balls and strikes and provided color commentary throughout what was a fun experience for all. We appreciatively doubled his pay.
We’re always open to new players. If you are even thinking about it, call! Dave Moore 352 350-1419
