We will have our Meet the Candidates’ meeting on this Sunday, February 11, 2018 as scheduled starting at 1 pm in the Community Center. Seating is limited due to fire regulations to 150 people.
As has been the custom, the Community Center will be set up in a way similar to how it is set up for a typical board meeting. The six candidates will each have a seat at the tables facing the audience. Each candidate has been asked to prepare a message lasting not more than five minutes (there is no minimum) telling the audience why he/she wants to run for the board. As there are six candidates, presuming that all of them come to the event, this will last thirty minutes more or less.
Following their presentations, there will be a question-answer segment in which the audience may ask one or more of the candidates a particular question relevant to LHPOA governance (this is a very broad area) and they will have a brief time to respond. For the sake of being even handed, I will ask the audience to focus on all the candidates and not on one or two in particular and to vary the range of their questions. Since this is quite spontaneous and unscripted, we are all greatly dependent on the good will and clear thinking of the audience and the notion that the candidates are mutually respectful and collegial. I am very optimistic that this will be the case.
I often say that this Q&A segment of the program has a soft landing. I have the room until 3 pm but if the questions require some extra time and they are of a high caliber and are engaging, no one will tear the microphone out of their hands at 3 p.m. sharp.
Once again, I thank the candidates for stepping forward and offering themselves as candidates in what will assuredly be a challenging but rewarding job.
