1. Lake Condition

As you are all aware, we have begun to experience matting of algae at various areas around the lake. As we have done in prior years, we are asking everyone to be very cautious around the obvious algae accumulation areas. We had samples of the water taken for testing on Monday, July 20th, but by the time we received the results, a full week of treatment was done impacting the reliability of the test results. To get a better post treatment reading, we had samples of the water taken for testing on Monday and expect to have results later this week. We will publish the results when we get them.

2. 7/25/2018 Lake Saver’s Plan Update

Our team will be at the lake Friday to begin set up and take samples so that we can see what impact the rains are having on the lake. John Tucci will be onsite Sunday to complete preparations. We are bringing enough product to treat continuously for as long as it takes to get the lake back to completely clear of Algae.

At minimum we will treat the lake Monday through Friday, but we are prepared to go through the weekend and through the following week if necessary.

One more update for last week.

Why is Lake Savers Recommending Extreme Caution for use of Copper Algaecides?

We have presented scientific information several times that shows why Copper Sulfate and even Chelated Copper is not at all advisable for lake treatment. Here are some specific details as it relates to Lake Heritage.

The lake obviously developed a heavy bloom condition and was on the verge of returning to 2016 level problems. This was a lake wide problem that had to be dealt with systemically first. It would have been impossible to treat the whole lake with Copper-Based Algaecides as this would have killed most of the beneficial organisms in the lake, released even more toxins from the blue-green algae and consumed lots of oxygen potentially harming fish – even with the aeration system.

The BioBlast Treatment is a much more effective approach for systematically treating the whole lake. In 2017 this also kept all the coves quite clear of any visible scums. We were expecting the same with this last treatment. However, mid-treatment on Thursday and into Friday a whole new batch of scum was deposited in the lake from above the Route 116 bridge.

Had you used Copper earlier in the week, the treatment would have had no impact on this scum that entered the lake late in the week. With BioBlast, we were able to continue to treat continuously to combat the influx of algae.

However, we did not achieve a “perfect” result before we left end of day Friday. We fully expect that this will continue to improve, and we will be back for another large treatment the week of July 30.

In the meantime, if the coves that still have scums do not clear up with just the BioBlast, spot treatment with Copper Algaecides is certainly an option next week that will do minimal damage to the overall lake restoration plan while offering a quicker relief to the remaining areas of concern prior to our next BioBlast Treatment.

Our recommendation would be to evaluate the lake on Monday-Tuesday and decide as to whether more immediate relief is needed and possible prior to our return on the week of the 30th.

Regarding John’s comments above concerning the coves and evaluating the situation early this week, we have contacted Aquatic Environment Consultants to discuss our copper sulfate back-up plan. They let us know that there is currently too much rain for an effective treatment this week. With Lake Savers here next week treating the lake all week, we agreed to talk near the end of next week to determine whether to proceed with the copper sulfate.
